„A Betrayal of Storms“, von Ben Alderson, is das erste Buch in einer queeren High-Fantasy-Reihe.
Ben hat es schon wieder getan. Mit einem absolut großartigen Schreibstil erschuf er eine Welt aus Fey. Aus Rache. Aus Tumult. Aus querness und sie saß. Die Charaktere die Ben um mich zeichnete, ihre Beziehungen, die Dynmaik zueinander, ihre Vergangenheiten, sie zogen mich unweigerlich an und ließen mich erst wieder frei, als ich das Buch beendete. Sie waren für mich so real, dass als ich die Hände ausstreckte und durch die Luft wischte, es sich so anfühlte, als könnte ich sie unter meinen bloßen Fingerspitzen ertasten. Was ich auch mochte war das mittelalterliche Setting und wie es in seiner Repräsentation in Minderheiten operierte. Das war großartig.
Der Weltenaufbau war gut, hatte aber noch Luft nach oben komplexer zu werden.
Ganz ehrlich, ich mochte die Geschichte gar nicht. Sie war mir an vielen Stellen zu einfach, geradlinig in ihrem Fokus und mit Wendungen versehen, die man hat Seiten schon vorher erahnen können. Ich vermisste auch die Action, die Magie und die Spannung. Sie war zwar vorhanden, aber sehr gering. Und das vermeintliche Böse blieb auch blass, eher unscheinbar.

Fazit. Gelungen in Repräsentation und Charakteren, aber nicht nach meinem Geschmack in der Geschichte. Ich kann es leider nicht empfehlen.

Das Buch hat von mir 3/5🌹bekommen.

„A Betrayal of Storms“, from Ben Alderson, is the first book of a Queer-High-Fantasy-Series.
Ben has done it again. With an absolutely stunning writingstyle, he crafted a world of fey. Of vengance. Of tumult. Of queerness. Really, a big plus point in my opinion. The characters Ben drew around me, their relationships, dynamics, pasts, they hooked me in und kept me prisoner, until I finished the book. They were so real, that when I put my arms out and swishing through the air, it felt like, I was gripping or feeling them with all my senses. I also liked the medieval vibe this book had going on and loved, how it operated on its represention.
The worldbuilding was okay in itself, but had way more potenial to be used and become complexer.
I have to been honest, I did not like the story. For me, it was on many passages to straightforward, singular in its focus and with twists, you could see coming pages away. As much as it hurts me to say, it just couldn´´ t capivate me. I was also missing the action, the chargining und above all, the magic. The monsters, which I was promised.

So, to sum everything up. I loved the characters, the style, but for me, the story wasn´´ t engaging enough. So I can´´ t recommend it to you all.

I gave the book 3/5🌹.
